When to Start Using Stretch Mark Oil During Pregnancy

Up to 9 in 10 pregnant women notice stretch marks at some point. They're a normal sign of a body doing something amazing, but it's natural to want to care for your skin as it grows. One of the most common questions we hear: when should I start?

Why stretch marks happen

Stretch marks form when skin stretches faster than it can adapt. Hormones that soften connective tissue during pregnancy, rapid growth in the second and third trimesters, and genetics all play a part. If your mom or sister had them, you're more likely to as well.

When to start: the short answer

Start as early as you like, ideally in the first trimester. Most stretching happens after about 20 weeks, so building a daily habit before then means your skin is already hydrated and supple when growth speeds up. It's never too late to begin, either. Moisturizing also helps with the dryness and itching many moms feel as their bump grows.

What actually helps

No product can promise to prevent every stretch mark, because genetics play a big role. What you can do is keep skin well hydrated and nourished:

  • Moisturize daily, once or twice a day. Consistency matters more than any single ingredient.
  • Massage it in. Gentle circular massage helps you cover every area and is a lovely moment to connect with your bump.
  • Layer oil and butter. Oils absorb fast; butters add a richer layer that holds moisture in.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well. Healthy skin starts from the inside.
  • Gain weight gradually, as your provider recommends.

How to apply bump oil and belly butter

  1. After a shower, while skin is still slightly damp, massage 3 to 4 drops of Defense + Repair Bump Oil into each area: belly, breasts, hips, thighs and lower back.
  2. Follow with a scoop of Stretch Mark Prevention Belly Butter to seal in moisture.
  3. Repeat at night, or anytime skin feels tight or itchy.

Bump Oil is made with organic sunflower, jojoba, tamanu, argan and avocado oils plus squalane and vitamin E. Belly Butter adds a rich layer of organic shea, cocoa and mango butters with macadamia nut oil. Get both together in the Stretch Mark Prevention Bundle and save.

What about after baby?

Keep going. Skin continues to change for months after delivery, and the same routine can help it feel soft and comfortable while it recovers. Both products are made for breastfeeding moms too.

The bottom line

Start early, be consistent and be kind to yourself. Your skin is doing something incredible.
